Kincaid #1 Kincaid #2 Kincaid #3 Kincaid #4 Kincaid #5 August 5: It’s hard to believe that another season of Mighty Bikes is coming to an end. We hope that you’ve had fun out there riding the trails.
We will have our annual season finale on Tuesday, August 11th at Kincaid. The fun starts at 7:00 p.m. with a cyclocross event put on by “Arctic Cross.” Mighty Bikes are invited to participate in the 2009 cyclocross series: http://www.arcticcross.org/
Immediately following is our potluck at the Kincaid Chalet. We ask that parents contribute dishes according to the following schedule:
Red/Pink Groups: Main Dish Green/Yellow Groups: Salad and Side Dish Gray/Purple Groups: Beverage Blue/Black Groups: Dessert
Be sure to stick around for the door prizes!
July 15: Here is a brief run-down on the rest of this week’s activities:
Thursday We will have our annual Bike-O coordinated by Coach Jill! The Bike-O is an orienteering event in which small groups of Mighty Bikers will hunt for treasure on the Hillside trails navigating the way with maps provided by the Arctic Orienteering Club. We will meet at Service High School in the usual spot at 7:00 p.m. It would be helpful to bring or wear something to stow treats in (pocket, small pack, camelback, etc).
Sunday What: Resurrection Trail to Devils Pass Singletrack Ride (RAIN OR SHINE)! Ride Leader: Coach Allen Time: 8:00 a.m. to ??? Meeting Place: Carr’s on Huffman nearest the bakery The Ride: We will carpool to the Cooper Landing trailhead of the Resurrection Trail. We will ride to Devils Pass and out the Devil’s Pass Trailhead Distance: Approx 24 miles Difficulty: Recommended for Red and Green groups and kids with a lot of endurance and at least 24” wheels.
Please let me know if you are unsure as your Mighty Biker’s ability. Kids should have good endurance. This is a long day in the saddle but it is very rewarding and takes us through some incredible terrain and scenery. We will have a 15-passenger van for carpooling. First come, first served.
Bring: Water and food, clothes for possible bad weather, bike/helmet/ shoes, and a good attitude!
Please RSVP no later than Friday evening if you plan to attend!
See you at the Bike-O!
Coach Janice

June 16:
This Sunday, June 21st, is our annual Crescent Lake Ride on the Kenai Peninsula. This is a minimum 3 hr. ride which starts on the old Sterling Highway roadbed. This section is up and down with some steep hills similar to Kincaid or Hillside riding. Then the trail goes up narrow single track with steady climbing, some tricky descents, likely some cow parsnip, moderate to difficult riding. Please RSVP to Darcy Davis (darcyd@gci.net) if your Mighty Biker would like to come.
This ride is appropriate for kids in the Green and Red Groups. It is highly recommended to have a 26” wheel, or be a very strong rider with a 24” wheel.
If there is enough interest, there could be a shorter option for kids in the Silver and Blue Groups. The younger kids would ride out the old road to the singletrack trailhead (or whenever they get tired) and then turn around.
RSVP: Ride Leader is Darcy Davis, darcyd@gci.net TIME: 8:00 A.M. PLACE: MEET AT CARR’S ON HUFFMAN NEAREST THE BAKERY FOR CAR POOLING We will have access to a 15-passenger van, first come/first served. The trailhead is at Tern Lake, intersection of the Seward Highway and Sterling Highway. Return time is late afternoon to early evening, depending on the speed of the group.
ITEMS TO BRING: · A bike in good working condition · Helmet · Wind shell and/or rain gear · Tights or leg warmers · Arm warmers · Gloves · Bug Dope · Extra inner tube · FOOD—energy bars, candy bars, fig newtons, peanut butter and jelly, etc. etc. etc. · WATER—sport drink would be best · A great attitude!
June 8th: Tuesday Time: 6:15 to 6:45 p.m. Meet in the lower parking lot by the Kincaid Stadium. If you plan to race, please arrive on time! Registration will close promptly at 6:45. Unfortunately there are NO exceptions. The race director needs to get out to the start on time so that the event runs smoothly. You will get a race number to go on your bikes—keep these numbers to use for ALL Kincaid races this season. What: Kincaid Kid Race and Junior Arctic Bicycle Club Races—little kids will go about a mile; big kids about 3-4 miles. There will be a fun ride immediately following the races. Why: You can GO FAST! Or, you can GO SLOW!!! All that counts is that you come out and have fun. Fee: Mighty Bikes race is free of charge, courtesy of the Arctic Bicycle Club Thursday Meet at Service High School on the north side. Be ready to ride at 7:00 p.m. Dress for the weather. Please walk your bikes when on pavement.
June 3rd:
Thanks for coming out to our first night of the 2009 Mighty Bikes season! I have to say I was very impressed by the behavior of the kids both at the meeting and when they were patiently waiting their turn for the grouping ride.
Thanks very much to ALL of our incredible parent volunteers and coaches for helping things go as smoothly as possible. The coaches will be setting up the groups and we hope to have a list ready by Thursday. I’m sure that there will be some shuffling around, so bear with us as we get all this dialed in.
REMINDER: Tomorrow night (Thursday) we are at the Hilltop Chalet at 7:00 p.m. for a safety talk with Elizabeth Manley, Alaska Department of Fish and Game. This will be a short presentation and then we will head out onto the trails.
NEXT WEEK: Our Thursday rides will begin at Service High School! Do not go to Hilltop Ski Area—we will not be there.
IMPORTANT SAFETY ISSUE: Last night a park user came very close to hitting a child riding in the Hilltop parking lot. Please insist that your child walk their bikes through the parking lot until they are on the dirt. This is a common practice with Anchorage Junior Nordic that I think we should also adopt. NO RIDING IN THE PARKING LOTS, PLEASE.
JERSEYS: There are a limited number of jerseys left for sale: $48 each.
WEBSITE: Please bookmark our website. Here you will find last-minute schedule adjustments and photos posted of your Mighty Bikers.
See you Thursday!
